Hawk Pro Review 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 1
This thread discusses the Content article: Hawk Pro Review

Any suggestions?

What needs to be added to the review to cover things I might have left out? Were all your questions answered?

Gary,

I guess I'll be the first one to ask a question.. When I was browsing the Century website I noticed on the upgrade section for the Hawk Pro they have a HEADER TANK for it available but I was just wondering the way the main tank is mounted would it be enough room for the header tank or where exactly would it be mounted. I know header tank is not really necessary for the Hawk Pro but I think it's something that I would consider when I advance on my flying skills.

Thanks,

Robert C.

I actually have already purchased a header tank to use on the Hawk, just in case... I got a Raptor header tank # PV0311 from Ricks (Ronlund.com).

Heres a picture of the tank.

I chose this over the Century models, because it had a nice bracket, and was inexpensive. Century makes two, the CN2137 mounts with zip-ties to a small "L" bracket and was cheap, but I didn't like the design very well, and the CN2213 with a nice machined aluminum mount. It is very nice, but double the price of the PV0311 Raptor part.

Now... where to mount it?
I noticed the Hawk Sports use a different rear lower frame that mounts the regular fuel tank much further to the rear as shown in this picture...

With this frame set, there is room in front of the main tank, but still behind the carb, with the header tank fittings pointing forward.

On the Hawk Pro the standard tank is mounted directly under the mainshaft. This is a very good design that make it so the center of gravity does not change as the fuel is consumed.

But that means there is not room between the main tank and the carb needle to mount the header.
I have looked for a good mounting place for the header tank, but so far I have not seen a spot I like. most people are doing something like this...

This puts the tank quite a bit higher than the inlet of the carb. Its my understanding (and it seems logical), that the tank should be centered on the carb inlet so that the mixture does not change as the heli changes orientation from right side up to inverted etc.
I think there is room in the RH-lower cheek area of the canopy in front of the engine. It may require a bit of trimming on the canopy, but when my skills improve, If it is necessary I will try to mount it there.

Gary,

If you mount the header tank in the RH-lower cheek area of the canopy would that be even with the main tank? I was just concern as far mounting the header tank a bit higher the main tank that the fuel would have to be drawn upward to the header tank, would this cause a problem? I know the tank is presurised but manufacturer such as O.S. also want you to mount the tank center to the inlet of of your carb for the simple reason they don't suggest for the fuel to drawn below the carb. As far as high performance airplane engine such as JeTT Engineering brand engine they strongly suggest to mount it the way that I mentioned above. But here is the million dollar question all the airplane that I own and built the tank is mounted below the inlet of the carb and it never becomes a problem yet for me, I just don't get it! Anyway it would be great if you could post picture on how you end up mounting your header tank and thanks for your response and please don't get tired of my endless questions.

BTW: I ordered the Hawk Pro 2 days ago and I can't wait to get it, I went ahead and got the Toki .40 sized engine w/ muffler I hope this engine is as good as they advertised. I guess I have the half of this Heli, what I have yet to convince my wife is the electronics for it.

Thanks Again,

Robert C.

Gary,

I saw this at RunRyder:

I wonder where did he get that brass standoff to mount the header tank with or did that thing comes with the tank?

I think it was fabricated by the owner, Looking at the pictures on the CN2213 on Century's site, the tank comes with the bracket, fittings and clunk, but nothing as far as a standoff. Looks like a good idea though. It keeps the header tank in line with the carb inlet. I may have to do something like that on mine.

Oh,BTW The header tank on my Predator is mounted almost exactly inline with the carb inlet, and it seems to work perfectly... I don't think its very critical as long as its not mounted to far off from the centerline.

Glad to hear you bought a Hawk Pro, thats cool, I really like mine. I understand that the Toki 40 is a real powerhouse. Just be careful to check the torque tube and setscrews in the tail box gear cross pins! I just got the rest of the stuff for the dual battery system today. I'll be putting that in place in the next few days.

Keep Smiling...
